Upcoming events our members are engaged in. We invite others to join AAWGT to participate with us.

January 23: Special Presentation Co-Sponsored by the Community Foundation and AAWGT

Please join us for an exciting evening with Carol Graham, author of Happiness for All? Unequal Hopes and Lives in Pursuit of the American Dream. Ms. Graham, a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, draws on cutting-edge research linking income inequality with well-being to show how the widening prosperity gap has led to rising inequality in people’s beliefs, hopes, and aspirations. She maintains that the high costs of being poor are most evident not in material deprivation but rather in stress, insecurity, and lack of hope.

2016 Grantee STAIR: It’s the STAIR Lady!

Start the Adventure in Reading (STAIR) focuses on READING! We fill a need for regularly scheduled one-on-one reading time with students who are at risk. STAIR would not exist without our 160 volunteers. One volunteer had this Halloween encounter with a previous STAIR student: “When I opened the door to hand out my pencils, I was greeted by a boy who said, ‘It’s the STAIR lady!’ I asked how he was doing and he said he is in 4th grade and reading is great! That made my day.” Many thanks to AAWGT! Please come and visit or volunteer at a STAIR site. You will make a difference in the life of a child!

Leadership Letter

As 2017 winds to a close, we look back with gratitude at the philanthropic spirit that inspires our members to be part of AAWGT and to collectively and individually give their time and talents to improve this County. And, we could not be more proud of the many excellent non-profit organizations that strive each and every day to improve the quality of life for women and families who live here. An excellent partnership!

AAWGT serves as a key avenue for developing and promoting local philanthropy. This year, AAWGT provided a series of education sessions for its members and the general public to delve into some of the thorny issues (e.g. domestic violence, foster care, and trauma) that make life very difficult for too many of our families. We encouraged members to serve as reviewers to select new grantees. We trained our members to serve as liaisons to organizations that were successful in getting a grant. We hosted a field trip to one of our grantee organizations to provide an up-close look at how services are delivered. We convened our annual grants showcase for 2016 grantees where they shared their successes and lessons learned. We asked 2016 and 2017 grantees to propose a wish list of 10 items or services they would love to have and our members could provide and made this available on our website

This year’s grants committee devoted a great deal of time to developing the protocol for a new 2-year Momentum Grant to be offered as a pilot in 2018 to test whether having 2 years of funding might have beneficial effects on an organization and its work that a 1-year grant cannot offer. We will monitor this initiative closely as it rolls out.

All of these activities are designed to build strong relationships - to build social capital. We place a great deal of value on the connections among our members, guests who attend our gatherings, non-profit leaders, and the broader community of Anne Arundel. We have work to do to enhance the numbers and diversity of our membership, continue to build an awareness of who we are and what we do, and take an even stronger role in promoting local philanthropy.

We are at the vanguard of an exciting movement spreading across the country. Complete details are in this article, Women Are Fueling the Growth of Collective Philanthropy Giving Circles. Here are a few highlights. The Collective Giving Research Group has found that there are now 1,600 giving circles nationwide, 70% of which have mostly female membership, and almost 50% of which are exclusively women. Donations to giving circles have tripled to $1.29 billion over the last decade, driven largely by women.

We’ve just elected new leadership for 2018. There are many opportunities for engagement in AAWGT so please be in touch to find out more. We enthusiastically invite those who are not currently members to consider joining us. We are united by purpose and commitment, but end up sharing friendships and good times as well.
